Launched in 1977, the Voyager program was designed in order to build on the work done by Pioneer 10 and 11. The Voyagers were designed in order to probe into the farthest reaches of our solar system beyond the planet Jupiter. Voyager 1, launched on September 5th, was actually launched later than Voyager 2 which was launched on August 20th. Both were launched by NASA from Cape Canaveral. The younger Voyager, Voyager 1, passed its predecessor in mid-course to Jupiter and was the first one to reach the planet in March, 1979. Using Jupiter's gravity to gain speed, Voyager 1 made it to Saturn in November of 1980. Lagging close behind in second place, Voyager 2 reached Saturn in August, 1981, Uranus in January, 1986 and Neptune in August, 1989. Both Voyagers are currently heading out of our solar system into deeper space, and they both continue to send observational data back to Earth. Voyager 2 carries with it on its expedition discs with information about our planet's natural environment, human activities, world music, and greetings in our world's languages.
